Artist's Biography
Biography of Mary Mottishaw
Mary is a Dawson Creek, Canada, painter and printmaker. She is inspired by the space evoked in the Peace River area landscape and the changes that landscape is seeing with increased resource extraction. Her work is informed by ideas, methodically planned, and often symbolic. Mary likes to work in layers; gradually building in significance and meaning.
Mary holds a certificate in Visual Arts from Northern Lights College (Dawson Creek, 2006) and continues her education by participating in workshops and classes. This past year she worked hard for her credits in a drawing class at the College and enjoyed an etching workshop at Ground Zero Studio in Victoria, BC.
In conjuction with Mary Parslow, the "Two Marys" have been busy giving printmaking workshops in their area.
She has won numerous awards, most recently two Honourable Mentions in the 2011 Peace Liard Regional Juried Art Show. Mary was gratified to see that many of her printmaking students also were award winners for their prints!
Her most recent shows have been as a member of Inspiration 6; the group of artists who share this website. They showed in Dawson Creek and Fort St John in the fall of 2010, and received great reviews.
Mary was the subject of a recent article in the “Art of the Peace” magazine (spring 2011).
She is busy preparing for her upcoming shows and exploring a new theme involving grids and circles that has captivated her imagination!
