Artist's Biography
Biography of Judy templeton
I picked up a book, flipped through it and was truly captivated. The book was The Tao of Watercolor by Jeanne Carbonetti. The desire to paint with watercolors was born when I realized how the vivid colors and their flow evoked positive feelings within me. I bought the book.
I started painting by taking lessons from a friend, purchased other books suggested by Carbonetti and began Sumi-E, where I found the combination of painting and chi (or energy) fascinating. I later attended one of Barbara Nechis’ workshops. Inspired by her book, Watercolor From The Heart, I was again struck by the soft washes, flow of colors and the joy I felt when viewing her works. Workshops with Judith Cornell, Linda Kemp and Gordon MacKenzie quickly followed.
Working as a registered nurse for over 30 years, mostly in maternity, my interests gradually led me to a deeper look at the art of healing. During the past 15 years my studies and subsequent teaching focused on yoga and Healing Touch. I learned that sounds like music, voice and those from nature could heal. I created a CD to promote relaxation during childbirth, Childbirth a Guided Visualization. The next step seemed to naturally evolve toward the use of visual art for healing. My goal became to inspire others with feelings of peace, serenity, harmony, joy and passion using paint and a brush.
My most recent workshop experiences were with artists Dianne Bersea, Elizabeth Harris-Nichols, Teressa Bernard, Mareth Warren, Michelle Zarb, Graham Flatt, and Grant Fuller.
One of my favourite places to visit is Japan; to explore the culture and to gain insight and inspiration regarding the art of Sumi-e. During my most recent trip in November 2009, I spent an afternoon with Sumi-e artist, Micheal Hofman, as well as time with Wood Block Printer, Ichimura Mamoru.
I love the learning process and truly paint for the fun of it! If my paintings have a positive impact on viewers in some way, then I would consider my efforts to have been even more worthwhile.
