Travelling Through Life with a Sketchbook / Journal
In recent years, Barb has had the opportunity to travel a little; first to Mexico and Costa Rica, then to India, and then to Beijing and Guilin, in China. Sketching in her journal on the Great Wall of China was an unforgettable experience, and a sure way to get over any inhibitions about sketching in public.
Trips like those are rare though, and it is the near and familiar that make for the best observations. One of Barb’s favourite places to sketch is Ft Nelson, BC, at the Museum on the Alaska Highway. Old trucks and vehicles, oilpatch machinery, hunting and trapping gear, domestic aids like old washers, stoves and irons make good subjects to draw, especially when combined with vintage style postcards.
Sketching is really more about the process than the end product. When you are sketching, you really have to slow down and actually see the object, person, or scene you are sketching. Taking a photograph is one thing, but making a sketch on site integrates an experience into your memory in a way that nothing else can.
Another ideal place to bring along your sketchbook is to a concert or coffee-house. For some reason, Barb always feels inspired to sketch Blues musicians, and live music venues. Try carrying a sketchbook and a pencil, or a fine black marker with you. You never know when inspiration will sneak up on you. Don't be concerned about being seen, sketching in public. Barb’s father used to say, "You wouldn’t worry about what people think of you, if you knew how seldom they did."
